A group of seven accused individuals of German far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
